new clay, new work
This is 2,050 pounds of clay. 82 individual 25 pound bags. I took delivery the middle of this month. A big head can take 3 to 4 bags of clay, but the size I'm working now takes one. It should last me a while!

Changed Jobs Again...

Start my old job new on Monday, but I'm off for the next five days. I'm spending today doing all the little things I haven't done in the past seven months--mostly cleaning! The next four will be spent in studio, provided my clay is still good. It should be.

I'm going to work on Geoffrey's head. Get it blocked out and built rough before Monday.

I'll put a picture Sunday evening.

Upcoming shows

September 3 through October 30 2005 I will have work at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, in Newport News Virginia. Their website is www.pfac-va.org. It is a "Reality Show", and will include work by Philip Pearlstein . I'm honored. I will have two heads and two pastels in the show, but no new work.

Sometime in January CNU is having a show featuring women artists. I have promised the organizer I would have three new heads done. But they will be small.

I LOVE MY NEW JOB! (And it is not a job when you love what you do.) But I am working extended hours and most weekends, which leaves me little time to be in the studio. I am looking for some time off sometime in late September, early October which I plan to spend in the studio.

I will of course post what I do :)

A new head and a couple paintings...
I’ve been inspired lately. I swore when I started the cat I was over doing the heads…and I’m working on another head.

But this one is small. No, really. It is small. I swear! I’m not going to build anything over 12-13 inches tall. Period.

So the head I’m working on is small. It’s going to be male, based on one of my favorite men’s cologne advertisements. I don’t off-the-cuff remember the name of the cologne…some nautical sounding name…but the model has a great head—I like the shape of his chin and his wide smile. I hope he looks as good bald as he does with hair. I have it roughly built up to the chin.

I’m also working on two small oil paintings. One I started a couple months ago and put away. I pulled it back out this evening. It is an 8 x 10 oil of a scene off the canal in Venice. The other is of my mom’s Chihuahua.

Go to www.ebay.com, and put in this item number: 7305306386 for a search. Do you BELIEVE what that dog was sold for? Look at the background…or lack thereof.

So I’m doing an oil painting of Missy. She is a very photogenic little dog, a smooth coat tan colored Chihuahua with lots of chin and neck folds. I have hundreds of photographs of her.

The folks have a sky light in their den. Mom tends to keep the drapes drawn, but if it is a sunny day Missy will follow the light of the skylight—taking her naps on the sun warmed carpet. I have some good images of her: half dark, half light. I hope I can do them justice.

I am not an experienced oil painter. I’ve dabbled is all. It will be interesting to see what I can do when inspired.

Almost Finished!
It’s completely built and I put on the first coat of underglaze—it will get three. I canned the idea of adding Egyptian embellishments—simpler is more quickly finished. It looks blue in the image but it isn’t. Of all my many jars of underglaze, the only one that had not completely dried out was a blue/green. I like blue/green, and hopefully Kathy will too. I’ll find out this weekend, she is coming to visit.

This is the last large piece I am going to build for a while. I’m going to stick to 12-13 inches or under.

I apologize for the less than sterling quality of the image. My good digital is in the shop, this was taken with a 1.3 Mega Pixel Fuji FinePix. Old, but still working--unlike my Canon which has been sent back to be repaired twice now.

Cat News...
If you keep it damp, you can work on a clay sculpture for months. January is a busy month for free-lance accounting: W2s and 1099s, VA6s and FUTA reports. Plus the parents were in Florida all month. Not much time for art.

February is looking a little better, Since the 1st I’ve been out in my studio 3 times. I built the head then cut it off. It is easier to work on it when it is separate—I’ll put it back on.

Cat Update New Years Eve...
This darn cat is much more difficult to build then I remember. Heads are easy, the basic shape is straight up. With the cat I have to worry about legs, tails, the chest, the head….

It’s coming along. I’ll probably finish the basic shape this weekend. I think I’m going to put Egyptian-type ornamentation on it. The chest and upper body are too big for the lower body. I’ll cut it down this evening.

Picture of the Moment
We had over 10 inches of snow the 26th of December. These two heads are what I term 'garden fodder'. They have never looked so good.

Today (yesterday, actually) it was 60 degrees outside.
