11/28/2004: "Getting Back to Work"

November 2002 I took one year off from making art. I was having to force myself into going into my studio. A temporary separation seemed like a good idea.

November 2003 was the official end of my year off. I started back strong, with commission for a pastel portrait of a friend’s children. But then...nothing. I had ideas for heads but no interest in building them. In fact I had an aversion to going back into my studio. So I didn’t. I entered shows with work from the previous year; I won a couple awards, but stayed out of my studio.

This past summer I decided to throw: coffee cups, cream pitchers, big bowls and little bowls, casserole dishes with lids and vases and tea mugs. In the making, while on the wheel, I thought about why I felt such an aversion to making art and I realized I didn’t like the direction my art was going.

The question then became: where do I want my art to go? What do I want to build?

Not heads. Not at this time. I’m going to start with a cat.

Lynne, your artwork is incredible and I cannot imagine you doing anything else. Loved your new website as it shows off your work and your talents.
...and not just any cat - but a blue cat. She's purrrfect.
