Building Techniques

All my work over 10 inches in height is hollow. I build using the coil method.

I've used the same clay formula for years. It's similar to a clay that may be purchase at Campbell's Ceramics called "Allen Rosenbaum's Terracotta" (Allen was the creator of the formula). To the best of my knowledge, the main difference between Allen's and my current formula is the grog: I use a fine grog, Allen uses a medium weight grog.

I love building large. I find the challenge of it inspiring and the results viscerally satisfying, but there are logistic issues to consider. Moving a 400 pound plus sculpture from point A to point B requires some serious upper body strength.
